The Gates of Dawn

The Gates of Dawn, formerly also called the Medinikai Gate, or in Polish "Ostra Brama", the ”Sharp Gate”. This is the only surviving one of the original gates in the city wall that was built in the early 16th century. The lower section was built between 1503 and 1522, the top part is the first half of the following century. The five round holes on the south wall were made for cannons to fire from, and were last used in the Napoleonic Wars. At the top is a relief of a mounted knight – called Vytis, the state emblem of Lithuania – supported by two winged lions. A recording is made just in front of the gate with a lot of traffic.
